There are 100’s of different dog foods and brands out there to choose from so how do you know which is the best for your dog? You don’t unless you know what you are looking for. I advise all of my clients to think about nature of their dogs. Simple fact is that canines are predatory carnivores. They hunt for their food just like wolves do in the wild.
My suggestion is to feed your dog a natural balanced diet that is as close as possible to what they would eat in the wild. And that means feeding raw meat, bones, cartilage and the organs to your dog. I do that but not many people have the stomach or budget to feed a raw diet. If I’m being completely honest it’s messy and a pain in the ass to stay up on plus my freezer is 99% dog food year round. In fact both freezers are!
You can get a variety of different raw foods at your local pet store, but it’s expensive.
Now if you can’t or don’t want to feed a raw diet then a dry food is your only other option. There are 100’s of brands to choose from and each food is different. I don’t have time to go into the details on them but the guys over at reviews.com have already done my leg work for me an narrowed down the top brands to choose from. I agree with their list as well. In short if you are looking for a dry dog kibble, go with something grain free, and with quality ingredients. Here’s a handy little info-graphic that will show you the ingredients to keep an eye out for.
