Q: Why is kneeling down recommended to pet a dog as opposed to standing over a dog ? Now you are at eye level, isn't' this more dangerous?
A: By getting down to a fearful dogs level you are showing the dog that you are no threat to him or her and welcoming them in for a safe interaction. The dogs first impression of you is going to be that of a friend rather than an enemy. Kneel down in front of a dog that you do not know and that is controlled by its owner, on leash. When kneeling down, you must always stay at an arms length away to reduce the risk of getting bit. Before attempting to pet any dog, always be sure that the owner has them under control. Make sure that the dog is relaxed and remains in a calm, sitting position, and that you have asked and been given permission to pet the dog.
Never reach over the dogs head to pet as they make take this as a threatening motion. Reach you hand in a soft closed fist, back side of hand up allowing the dog to sniff you, then roll your hand over and pet the dog under the chin. If the dog becomes tense, their eyes widen or they look away from you, do not make any sudden movements, slowly lower your hand to the ground, slowly stand up ,back away a few steps and then turn around and walk away. Standing over a dog is a more threatening posture and some dogs can be easily intimidated by this.
