Dogs and the cold weather
Being that the cold weather and snow has so graciously blessed CNY with it's presence, please keep in mind that ice melting chemicals and salt placed across sidewalks and roads can cause sever burning to your dogs footpads. Applying products on the pads such as bag balm, Vaseline or Musher's Secret will help reduce the pain that is often caused by road salt and chemicals. Remember to wipe off footpads when they return indoors. A dogs normal body temperature is between 100.5 degrees F and 102 degrees F. When a dog's internal temperature drops below 96 degree F ( by being exposed to cold weather for long periods or getting wet and cold) it is possible that hypothermia is occurring. Signs to look for include: shivering, lethargy, muscle stiffness, lack of co-ordination,low heart and breathing rates, fixed and dilated pupils or collapse-worst case, coma. Small short haired dogs should wear sweaters or blankets when taken outside for walks during cold weather to maintain their current body temperatures. Should you suspect hypothermia, seek medical attention; even the mildest case should be attended by your veterinarian to ensure no permanent damage.
