Q: I am trying to find a puppy. I have found alot of cute little ones but they are mixed mutts. Are they just as good a dog as any?  Kerry Rome, NY

A:  Mixed breed versus Purebred. Whether you are looking for a family pet, or a working dog the first thing you should always remember is that all rules apply to each of them. You are the leader under all circumstances. Set the rules from the beginning and they will follow. Where most prefer purebreds because they know the background, familiar with the temperaments and have met the parents you don't have this luxury with a mixed breed dog.

Purebreds also were whelped with a purpose and genetically bred for a specific duty, conformation, protection, therapy or  breeders and some just family companions.  A mixed breed however, can not only make a good family companion, but as long as it has the proper temperament and drive it can also be used for many forms of therapy or other working areas like search and rescue.

Before choosing a mixed breed, you are going to want to know all that you can about it. If it is was a surrender, ask why? Maybe it wasn't good with kids, or the kids weren't good with the dog. If it was a stray, find out how long? Strays "sometimes"  become so independent that they  do not need nor care for human leaders.

If your mixed breed  is a pup, ( accidental litter ) again, choose one that comes readily to you, is confident, but doesn't try to dominate you. The pup should choose you. Don't take " the cutest one " because he or she may turn into a gremlin when you're not looking. Have a trainer evaluate the dogs temperament before taking the dog home to make sure that you are making the right choice.

Purebred versus mixed breed is a personal preference. There are several mixed breeds in the shelters and rescue groups that are in need of good homes.

We have said this many times " it takes a greater leader, to have a great dog"

If you make the commitment, stick with it. Educate yourself, teach your dog.
